About
Alan Li, MA, LMHCA
I'm a couples and individual therapist, working by video with clients across Washington State, in English and Mandarin.
Why this work
I enjoy relational work, and understanding in depth how we interact with each other. Couples work sits in the middle of all that, especially with interracial and cross-cultural couples. Individual work is important too, and I do it, but a couple's dynamic has more nuance and depth.
I'm a first-generation immigrant, so I know what it's like to carry two sets of expectations at once, and how often that shows up in a relationship first.
I work in English and Mandarin. Finding the right words for attachment and emotion in Chinese is something I keep working on, in sessions and in my research.
Background
Alongside couples work, I've worked with Chinese and Asian immigrant families and with international students.
I'm also a doctoral student in Counselor Education and Supervision, studying how the language people feel at home in shapes whether they ask for help. Read about my research →
